My 40 Pre-K students love to learn and move. Coming mostly from backgrounds of poverty, they need lots of activities to get to where they need to be for kindergarten. Our classroom needs lots of different activities to keep their interest going.
Our school has over 90% receiving free or reduced rate lunch.
Most of our parents don't have the extra income to purchase materials that help them get ready for kindergarten. By the time they get to preschool, they have some lost ground to make up for.
My Project
This is the first year for our school's play-based preschool. Our 4 and 5 year olds use Playdoh, sand, rice, paint, shaving cream, and anything else we can think of to form letters and numbers. We sing, we dance, we skip, we jump, we even form the letters and numbers with our bodies! You would think every child who attends would have no problem recognizing the uppercase letters and numbers 1-10. You'd be wrong.
About a third of our students still only recognize 2 or 3 letters and numbers.
An iPad will give these students another route to letter and number recognition. There are so many age appropriate apps that will provide a fun alternative to what we're already doing.
