Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Speech and Language Pathologist working with a team of 3 other therapists in a Title I school located in the south Bronx. We service kindergarten to third grade students, majority are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD). Our students are verbal and non-verbal.
Many of our students struggle to communicate their basic wants and needs.
The struggle to communicate their needs can often lead to behavioral reactions. These students have so much potential to communicate, we would love to help them in any way we can.
My Project
Many students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder have difficulty communicating. For non-verbal students, another way to communicate is by using picture symbols and speech generating devices/applications. Having an iPad will allow us to teach the students to communicate to their greatest ability. This iPad will promote the students to not only communicate to get their needs met but also allow them to communicate and socialize with their families and classmates. Providing a child a method of communication can drastically change their life and their educational experience.
Imagine being in a foreign country with no way to communicate.
Until a translator comes along to save the day. This is what the iPad will facilitate for our children.
This iPad will be used across all the classrooms we service with a broad spectrum of students. Thank you for your support. Not only are we grateful, but our students are as well.
