Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Are you blessed to have total movement of your arms, hands, and fingers? I work with students who have Cerebral Palsy and they have limited arm movement. The Apple iPad with Wi-Fi is the perfect size touch screen for them to use with apps as well as internet sites.
The children that I work with are beautiful children.
These children have multiple disabilities and they are all truly unique in their learning styles. A majority of my students have cerebral palsy. Their other disabilities include Orthopedic Impairments, Other Health Impairments, Speech Impairments, and Vision Impairments. They are also identified as having intellectual disabilities. I am looking for ways for them to demonstrate what they know because I do not feel that the label of intellectual disability defines them appropriately. These are bright students who need to find more appropriate ways to engage in and demonstrate their learning. I wonder how any of us would have tested when we started school if we were non-verbal and had limited communication skills. I am hoping that the next time that their three year evaluations are done that they will be able to respond during testing in a way that will more accurately measure their current skills and their potentials.
My Project
An Apple iPad will increase the academic activities that the students in my classroom will be able to engage in. The students that I have are beginning to navigate computers/tablets and the more choices that they are provided with, the more that they will be able to make choices about their learning material. Due to the fact that they are non-verbal and their communication is limited it is not always possible for me to determine material that they would like to learn about in the areas of Science and Social Studies. I think that they will enjoy navigating through the apps and also internet sites in order to show me their interests. I am also aware of some math and reading apps that I can use for them based on their current levels in those areas. It is very exciting to see how these students are taking off academically with the use of electronics in their hands and with this donation from supporters of Donors Choose I am hoping to continue to build our materials.
An iPad would give students with limited mobility better access to academic material that is presented with apps that are available only on iPads at this time.
We do have android tablets at this time, but I would like to expand the computer access that these students have through the addition of apps that have been created exclusively for iPads.
