iPad My Science Skills
My students need an iPad and case to further their learning of physical science.
Do you remember mixing chemicals in chemistry class just to watch them explode or boil over? Due to safety concerns and limited budget, my students will never have these memories. Nor will they get to participate in physics labs in class. An iPad can help bring these labs closer to reality!
My students are 8th grade physical science students in CA.
Our school serves a majority of low-income students who work hard and want to do well. We study astronomy, physics, and chemistry in preparation for the science CST test in the Spring. My students come from working class parents who want more for their children. My students are difficult to motivate and many have limited technology at home.
With technology in the classroom, my students can learn all about the physical world around them. An iPad is exciting to the students and will help motivate them to learn new science concepts and bring the world into the classroom for them. We are limited on what resources we have and can use for labs, so having a virtual lab is the next best thing! Students will use apps to do virtual chemistry labs, learn physics using games modeled with real physics and learn to make their own games using an app that requires them to know physics to create their game. Students can see real videos and photographs of the solar system while studying astronomy, as well as see a virtual planetarium. Students will be able to track satellites in space and see the images they are bring back. Students will also use the iPad to view lectures that they missed do to an absence.
In order for students to do well in science, they must first be interested and motivated to learn.
Having technology will motivate and make them excited to learn astronomy, physics, and chemistry. When students love the subject they are learning, they learn more and become life-long learners in the subject. My goal is to create lifelong science students with a love of all things science and a curiosity for their world around them!
