My students need an Apple iPad and protective folio case to further promote both reading and math differentiation and keyboarding skills for all students.
Help us join the modern world! The three student computers in our classroom are 10 -12 years old. Currently, only one is working! Please help me teach these children about the wonders of technology and all they can do with it.
We are a K - 5 grade school located in Tennessee.
The student population at our school is 67% economically disadvantaged. Many of these children come from homes where day to day survival is the main priority and school is pushed to the side. Due to this, a large percentage of my students do not have computers at home. School is the only opportunity they have to use technology. Despite these challenges, our school continues to beat the odds and be a top performing school. Students are challenged to leave everything behind when they enter my classroom and learn everything their minds will soak up. Because of this school wide encouragement, these students are achieving and showing huge gains. These students deserve every opportunity we can give them to go as far as they can possibly go. I truly believe improved technology can help with this goal.
My Project
Bringing an iPad into our first grade classroom will expose these young minds to so many things. Our class will be able to use it across the curriculum to include reading, math, writing, science, social studies, and research. In reading for example, we will be able to use it for partner reading. This will promote reading with clear voices and expressions. Reading levels will be differentiated so individual needs are met. Students will be actively engaged in math games and will be learning without even realizing it. As for science and social studies, the iPad will be a valuable tool for research and to show students a world they don't even know exists. We are fortunate to have a projector in our classroom, so everything I teach will be on full screen and I will be able to maneuver amongst the students and not be tied to a desk top. The teacher can now be more actively involved in what students are working on.
I truly believe if we can engage these young students at an early age, their futures can take a different path.
These are the most vulnerable and impressive years and we much intervene now to reach these children. Having updated and usable technology will make this task much easier. This iPad is only the beginning. In my dreams, someday I hope to have a class set. But, Rome wasn't built in a day so having one iPad in our classroom will be such an asset.
