We start every day eating breakfast in the room. We model social and eating skills that many of us take for granted. We laugh, smile and discuss things that are important to our students and interest them. Building a connection with the students, I believe, is the first step in a successful year!
I work with students in all grade levels in the elementary school.
My students have moderate to severe disabilities that include but aren't limited to communication disorders, cognitive disorders and motor and mobility issues. Communication is a real struggle for all my students both expressively and receptively. Learning and teaching them a way to effectively communicate is needed to progress and teach new skills in any academic areas. All my students have different success stories none more important than the others. We celebrate small achievements every day. The school is a full inclusive school. So although I teach in resource setting, my students are integrated with their "regular" same aged peers throughout the day so that all kids are in their least restrictive environment where learning can occur.
My Project
The iPad I am requesting will be used to help my teaching and integrate a huge part of today's world; to be college and career ready. Today everyone is tapped into technology in some way. ALL students, even those with disabilities, need to learn how to function in the way the outside world is. Using the iPad will not only help my student use fine motor skills (isolating a finger to touch, tracing) it will also allow me to teach them in a way that is encouraging, rewarding and engaging. I will use the iPad specifically for handwriting tasks (tracing letters, numbers), teaching phonics (letter sounds, letter names) and teaching foundational math skills (numbers, counting). The apps that are available now will be such a help to incorporate into and supplement my lessons in such a way that allows for some independency upon my students when they can complete a direction in the app on their own.
Donating to this project will make technology available to these students in my classroom.
My classroom will be comparable to others in the district with the materials I am able to provide to my students. Every small change impacts my students and using an iPad with them will allow them to shine and be proud of themselves when they succeed.
