Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small school with one class per grade, Transitional Kindergarten through 8th, in a rural farming community. There are approximately 300 students and 16 of those are in Transitional Kindergarten. We have a diverse student body with many different types of students. Our unique rural setting is a wonderful place for our kids to grow up and learn together, and it creates a warm community, but there are challenges as well. Since we are a small rural school, our funding options are limited. We have a limited tax base, and we don't receive developers' fees.
My transitional kindergarten students, aged 4 and 5, are sponges soaking up and enjoying their first experiences in school.
They are discovering what school is all about and how to become lifelong learners! They are excited to be at school, and it is my responsibility to provide an environment that cultivates the love of learning!
My Project
Our school was introduced to the program Flipgrid which allows students to record themselves and then share their recording with the class. Many TK standards are related to social emotional learning, and this avenue will allow the students to share ideas with each other and then respond.
I have tried this with Chromebooks, but they are very cumbersome for students at this age.
Most of the students are used to using tablets, and the iPads will remove the technology difficulties and enable the students to get in and use the program. I plan to use them for sharing stories and story retellings.
Many times the students want to share things with the class, but we don't have time to listen to them all. This platform will enable the students to share stories that I can listen to and respond to after school when I have more time. This technology can be used with any subject matter. I can see them using it to share what was learned in social studies and science as well is literature story retell.
