Students with learning disabilities can greatly benefit from using technology. Regular education classrooms at my school are provided with Promethean boards and iPadss. I strongly believe the students in the Exceptional Children's Resource class could benefit from the use of the technology too!!
I work in a Title 1 school with eager students wanting to learn.
The majority of my students have learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities have the ability to learn. Yet, for some reason according to the academic testing there is something that is hindering them from learning. My students can range from 2 to 3 grade levels behind their non-disabled classroom peers. I work on skills in reading, writing, math, and/or social skills. Depending on the severity of the disability, I either pull students out of their regular education classroom to work with them in small groups or I go into their regular education classroom to work with them. I am required to focus on the students Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This legal document has goals written specifically for each child to address skills they need extra help with to be successful in their regular education classroom.
My Project
Within my intervention groups, no student is the same! I may have 30 minutes to work with a group of 4 in which 1 student is working on fluency, 1 student working on phonics, 1 student working on vocabulary, and 1 student working on comprehension. The iPad can be set up to be self sufficient. Students will be able to utilize one of the many educational apps offered and play games on the iPad geared towards their IEP Goals while I work with another student. Many of the apps allow teachers to create a list of students and will collect data that can be emailed or printed. Thus, having the iPad my students will have fun learning and I will be able to collect data whether I am working with them directly or indirectly.
The iPad will tremendously help maximize time to increase student progress.
I will use the iPad to activate students learning, collect data, and keep attendance. Just as adults, kids are competitive and in my class are taught to compete against themselves not against peers.I have found that they will continue to play a game to increase their own scores. Kids don't realize that they are learning through playing the games repetitively! Technology is a standard for creating 21st Century Learners!
