iPad, iLearn, iFeel - iPads Needed for Social Emotional Learning
My students need iPads to be engaged and motivated during counseling sessions, as well as learn to regulate their emotions through various applications.
We are a Title I school where majority of the students are immigrants, English Language Learners and/or with special needs. We also have students that are born in the United States, but are sent back to their mother country to be cared for by relatives. They are then sent back to the United States when they reach school age. At a young age, they are expected to adapt to a new culture, learn a new language, and go to school for the first time. My students range from PRE-K to 5th Grade. They are curious, creative, and ambitious. However, given the circumstances, some students aren’t able to learn with their fullest potential. Their curiosity, creativity, and ambition is inhibited by the lack of social emotional intelligence. The students aren’t able to regulate their emotions to be ready to learn.
Social emotional learning plays a huge role in academic achievement.
As an educator, it is my responsibility to value and educate children as a whole. I am looking to shift their school experience and inspire them to achieve in all areas.
My Project
In the world we live in now, technology has taken over and changed the way counselors conduct individual, group, and at-risk counseling. We need iPads to stay connected in this fast pace world and conduct productive counseling sessions. We use technology to stay current, connect and stay connected with other counselors, and gather new resources. Pinterest and school counseling blogs are a great platform for new information and creative ideas.
Technology can also be utilized in numerous ways to engage and motivate students.
There are numerous iPad application that teaches social emotional intelligence. To name a few, breathe2relax, focus on the go, stop breathe & think, etc. Breathe2relax manages stress and allows students to take deep breaths. This is especially useful during state testing time for frustrated and anxious students. Focus on the Go include games aimed at teaching students different ways to calm down when they are angry. In addition to social emotional learning, there are many other applications are used for academic improvement. With your help, my students will gain valuable life skills and achieve academy success.
