My Students

"Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say."- Rosemary Crossely The students in my classroom are unable to communicate verbally, so it is my job as their teacher to find alternatives for them to communicate.

I teach a kindergarten and first grade class for students with autism in a special education school district.

I currently have 5 students, all of which are non-verbal or have severe communication impairments. My students are amazing children, and I am constantly trying to figure out what I can do to help meet their needs.

My Project

In obtaining an iPad in my classroom, my students would have access to communication right at their fingertips. The portability of the iPad would allow me to take the iPad with us around the classroom and to other areas of the school. People with autism are visual learners, and the iPad is full of imagery that can be customized to meet the needs of each individual learner in my classroom.

An iPad would change the lives of my students by giving them an opportunity to communicate their wants and needs.

I find it difficult as a teacher to know that my students are unable to tell me how they are feeling or what they need. I believe that an iPad would open new doors for my students in the area of communication and education.
