Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, motivated, and eager to learn. For many of them, Kindergarten is their very first school experience. They come to school ready to learn and proud to share their new knowledge. Many enter without any letter name/sound knowledge and do not know how to write their name. They leave kindergarten as readers, writers, and life long learners.
100% percent of the students at our school qualify for the free lunch program.
Over half of the students are learning English as a second language with parents who do not speak English at home. They are motivated by technology and love to learn. I want my students to receive the best introduction to school as possible. I want to instill a love for learning and growth, and to create lifelong learners.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to put their learning into their own hands. The addition of one more iPad in the classroom will allow each student in a small group to each use their own iPad during our Daily 5 Literacy hour. This is one of the most important times of our day when students work in small groups around the classroom to build their literacy skills. It also allows me the time to work with a small group for Guided Reading.
Having an iPad for each student in the small group will keep each student engaged and motivated, and it will give them choices for different educational apps.
The students will have access to Language Arts apps such as, Teach Your Monster to Read, Starfall, and ABC Mouse. They will also have access to Mathematics apps such as Kindergarten Math, Animal Math, and Teach Me: Kindergarten. Regular use of these Language Arts and Mathematics apps has shown to improve literacy and math skills. These apps will also give my English Language Learners an opportunity to enhance their language proficiency.
