This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The iPad offers thousands of educational applications I could use in my classroom to help make learning Biology more interactive and engaging for my students. Even one iPad would open up a whole new way of learning in my classroom.

We are a comprehensive, traditional public high school.

My students range in age from 9th to 12th graders who have a wide variety of academic skills and experience. I have several classes filled with 11th and 12th graders who have either not taken a science since 8th grade or who are repeating Biology for the second, sometimes third time. In the same periods, there are also students who are in the 9th grade and already have solid academic skills. This ends up being quite a challenge for me to make the subject challenging, yet accessible, for every student in my class. Over 70% of our students speak English as a second language and more than 50% of our total student population qualify for free or reduced meals.

My Project

There are many applications on the iPad that I'd love to use in my classroom. From random number generators (a more fun way to get everyone involved with participating), to instantaneous grade recording, I could use an iPad while walking around the classroom. It would give me better access to my students and it would give my students immediate, one-on-one access to information. There are also many applications relating to Biology (not available for the PC) which I could access on the iPad then project on the wall for my class to see (I have an Elmo which give a clean projection of the iPad screen). Ultimately, these applications help make learning Biology more engaging and accessible to my students. Using an iPad, and its applications in class, would also expose students to a technology which many don't have at home.

An iPad will increase learning in my classroom by making the subject more accessible and fun.

However, another reason this would have such an impact on my students' lives is because I'd be modeling technology use as a tool, rather than just a toy. My students mainly know how to use technology to send texts, post pictures on Instagram, and maybe post on Facebook. Showing students how to use technology to learn would have a long-lasting impact on their lives.
