Every day I am constantly acting out different vocabulary words for my SEI students to understand the material.
The Grade 8 SEI students are from all over the world.
We have many different languages and cultures arriving to our school each month. 78% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. 22% are English Language Learners. They are extremely motivated to improve their English and become acquainted with other students. 8th grade is a tough grade for any students but its extremely difficult for ELL students to leave their home and loved ones and travel across the world to country where they don't speak the language.
My Project
Everyday the students are transition during the literacy block in centers. I would love to have an iPad at one of the centers for the students to use to look up pictures, videos and translate a word or two that they do not understand. When we are not in centers I will be able to use the iPad to give points on our classroom behavior management app called Class Dojo. The students are able to receive points when they are on task, working hard and participating. They also can loose points if they are not on task. This is used to help keep the students from loosing focus. This is also a tool that I can use to communicate with the parents. They are able to look at the points and send me messages.
This is will improve my teaching strategies and will also help the students at the centers during literacy block.
These students who have just arrived in the United States and possibly have never used some of the new technology will get the opportunity to expose themselves to new things that they would have been exposed to before. I want to help the students feel excited about learning English!
