My Students

A typical day is spending time in classrooms grades K-8 with multiple communication styles - total communication, spoken English, and some students with communication devices. Serving so many different ages and needs requires a lot of flexibility, organization, and access to resources quickly.

My students are deaf and hard of hearing and use hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems, sign language, spoken English, and some communication devices to have access to language and the common core curriculum.

Many of my students have at least a 2-year language delay, which makes grade-level learning more challenging. Students who need these resources are bused in from all over the county to this school. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program is located within a neighborhood public school which enables our students with hearing loss who have near typical academic skills for their age to be within a regular education setting during the day while still having the watchful eye for the deaf and hard of hearing professionals to ensure their success before those students are ready to go to their regularly-assigned school location. Students who need more specialized supports are in the same building and have more intimate classrooms with sign language and spoken English instruction.

My Project

My students will be able to use an iPad and apps for speech and language therapy services which include communication skills, written language skills, articulation, and vocabulary building. It is very useful to have technology readily available to expand on students' language in teachable moments (e.g. encountering an unfamiliar word in a reading passage and being able to go to a search engine to show the student a picture of the unfamiliar word and explain the reason for the signed vocabulary).

Having technology available in a therapy setting will improve the efficiency of the therapy sessions, vocabulary opportunities, and real-world exposure while still being in the classroom.

This will change my students' lives for the better by providing another way to increase their language and English writing skills through games and activities when paper and pencil tasks can be sometimes daunting.
