The students in my school come from all over Nassau County to learn in an environment that best fits their needs. The students can range in age anywhere from 8-21. I teach an ungraded elementary school classroom, where I have six students who are primarily classified as having autism and are non-verbal. Although my students are ages 9-11, their functioning level is similar to that of toddlers.
Typically their deficits include communication, social interactions, obsessive interests, and repetitive behaviors.
In order to be successful, they require a highly structured learning environment. Visual schedules, token economy systems, sensory integration therapy, significant prompting, and lots of positive reinforcement are just a few things that aid them throughout the school day!
My Project
My students will use the iPad to communicate their wants and needs throughout the school day. This will especially help aid the transitioning process from the hectic schedule these children are exposed to. They will be able to participate in lessons when questions are asked verbally by communicating with the iPad. Essentially my students will be more able to participate in all aspects of a school day by using the iPad as their voice.
Any donation whether big or small will be making a huge impact not only on my students' lives but on mine as well.
To be able to understand each other is a huge component in the learning process. I would love for my students to reach their full potential and with help from the iPad, I believe they can!
