Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These students have given up going to a traditional middle school in an effort to excel in their academics in two languages. This dual language school serves all in the community and will soon be opening its doors to anyone in the city that wishes to attend and learn to master their academics in both English and Spanish.
We are located on the campus of Franklin High School and share a small space area for only the dual language middle school students.
These students come from all backgrounds and most are fluent in both languages by the time they arrive. With our small enrollment, we can focus more one to one with each child and adapt to their needs in an effort to see "all" succeed.
The classroom photo is of the top twelve students I have in grades six (second place in LAUSD sixth grade competition), grade seven (second place in LAUSD seventh grade competition), and grade eight (first place in LAUSD eighth grade competition) that competed at Math Field Day March of 2018. These students always make everyday a joyous day to go to work and fill their sponge brains with knowledge.
My Project
I am trying a new concept in which I present all notes and lessons online so students and parents can view anytime from home or afar when absent. These online notes are used in class and students can at any time review the notes, videos and class remarks on their own or share with their family.
Currently, my students are using old Kindles in the classroom, but I want them to be able to input their thoughts instantly from their seats and allow them to create their own review videos to post and share.
Our Kindles just cannot do anything except help them gain access to log in and read notes online. They are unable to input ideas, create videos or even watch some videos since these Kindles are old.
The iPad donation that we seek will help us take the next step towards elevating their education and use of technology within the classroom. I currently use OneNote, online textbooks and Desmos in the class on the projector screen, but my goal is to give each child a more hands-on experience with these iPads. I want to be able to call upon students to share their thoughts and from their seats write in the class online notes instantly with the iPad or be able to share created iPad videos to help better understand the learned concepts and possibly use them as future review guides.
My goal is to create a learning interactive environment. Through the use of these iPads, my hope is that students who dislike math but love technology, will buy in to learning because it is more interactive daily in the class.
"Teachers who use technology to support learning in the class report greater benefits, engagement and skills compared to those that do not use technology".
