My students have a strong desire to learn and improve their skills. I would like to be able to assist them in the most effective way, in reaching their goals.
I work in a public option school.
At this school, we encourage students to embrace intellectual rigor by providing a safe environment for students to explore new ideas, challenge each other, and show them that what they are learning goes beyond the walls of a school.
Students must choose to come to this school over their neighborhood school. And, because of the programs offered here, students make that choice in overwhelming numbers. They share that their reason for coming here is because it's okay to be smart. It's okay to be yourself, even if that is different from the "normal" teenager. It's okay to express yourself.
I am amazed, daily, by the desire these students have to learn, improve their skills, and by the acceptance they have for each other.
My Project
I am asking for an iPad and stand in order to better help my students reach their learning goals.
When my students are asked to write an essay, they want to share it with the class in order to get feedback. With the iPad, the students will be able to share their writing with the class AND revise and edit.
When my students are asked to give a speech, they often create electronic visuals that enhance their message. With the iPad, they will be able to share those visuals electronically without having to make print copies.
When my students are asked to learn a new skill, they often ask to take pictures of what I have modeled for them, so they can reference it later. With the iPad, I will be able to make those notes available for the students at home, via my website.
When students are absent, they worry about what they have missed. With the iPad, they will be able to access notes that were taken in class at home.
With the iPad, I will be able to better support students.
The biggest benefit of the iPad is the ability for me to support students in reaching their goals.
By being able to make available, electronically, work that was done in class, I will be able to support students at home. Students who were absent, will be able to access the work. Students who have special needs will have access to examples. Parents will have the ability to more effectively help their children because they to will have access to the work done in class.
