Do you remember reading those Weekly Readers when you were a kid? Remember being able to feel a part of the Presidential elections in first grade? Finding out about animals really got me interested in science! My kids have not been a part of Weekly Reader and Time for Kids and are missing out.
My students are from a high poverty area where 70% or more are on free and reduced lunch.
Many are from single parent homes and they are eager to learn. The students have an amazing drive to learn reading skills, but have a lot of difficulties because they have come to me with limited vocabulary experiences. Most of my children come from multiple sibling homes and time to spend with each child can be extremely valuable and rare.
Often times they are not aware of what is happening in their world each day. These children need to be a part of what is happening in their community, their nation and their world.
My Project
Exposing our children to current events from the Weekly Reader magazines will help build cultural awareness in these children. It will help them connect to their community, state, nation and world and see how other children their age are living in many parts of the world.
The TIME magazine for children opens up a science world of the many animals they may not see in their part of the country. They can learn how other parts of the world care for these special animals and it will further build on the science skills I teach each day.
Further, the magazines in the hands of each child helps to build their reading skills as they begin to apply the strategies they learned in school to read and use them in real situations and they LOVE to have something that is their own.
Your contribution to this project will help my students become more aware of their world around them and better citizens.
