I teach a fairly large group of anywhere from 78-85 middle school students, with next year’s group getting close to 100 students. These students range from high to low, not only in intelligence but also in maturity.
Teaching 7th grade students from 11 to 12 years old is a new experience every single day!
I, personally, have three heterogeneous classes and one inclusion class with a special education instructor. I usually have around 15 IEP’s and 15 students with modifications based of 504 plans. Needless to say, my classroom is very diverse and the need to flexible seating has grown recently.
I would like for my classroom environment to attempt to mirror what students will encounter in their future careers. Collaboration, problem solving, and meaning making are at the forefront of most job descriptions. Currently standard desks situated in rows does not foster open communication and collaboration quite like flexible seating could. I would love to be able to accommodate the needs of my students by providing them with adaptive learning space and making conducive to their personal learning styles.
My Project
Please help me give my students the ability to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment, and the chance to be comfortable and make my classroom conducive for learning. With these options of flexible seating, my students will be engaged and will be comfortable and want to be involved.
With flexible seating, my student will take ownership in the learning process and education will be allowed to take place!
Like I said before, I would like to make my classroom a suitable environment and be able to help all students obtain success in the classroom.
