Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten at a Title I school. The majority of our students receive free or reduced rate lunch and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. A high percentage of the students in my class are ESOL as well as some students with special needs.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and I love to foster their uniqueness.
They all bring something special to our classroom. They have limited resources at home, and my goal is to provide them the resources needed to succeed.
My Project
I teach in an area where an influx of students fleeing from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria are moving. They are coming from Puerto Rico and Cuba and do not speak the language. In my classroom, I utilize an Interactive Smart Board which I use to teach my students. I have access to our reading curriculum in an interactive website. The website instructs on phonics, vocabulary, grammar, sentence building and all the concepts to be learned as well as the literature books. My students enjoy these interactive activities however, they are at times interrupted because my computer does not have the capacity to run them. I wish to have a computer that has the potential to run the tactile activities. The all in one computer will be beneficial in running the website without delay. The VGA converters are to be able to connect the document camera and other devices I utilize for instruction. These students will greatly benefit from these activities and it will improve their English language skills. It is our responsibility to catch them up for educational lost time and make them feel comfortable in our country.
Research shows that if students are involved in their learning they will make immense learning gains.
The interactive activities will support what was taught and improve my students' overall understanding of the reading concepts. Donations to my project will make a significant impact on my students' learning and allow them to break down the language barrier they are facing.
