As an educator in a low-income, high poverty school in Georgia, my students are faced with several challenges; both in and out of the classroom. They all receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status, and come from nontraditional homes. Many students do not come to school with supplies.
Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, with so many parents being out of work, this year's back to school season is going to be especially stressful for my students and their families.
Despite the many challenges these kids face, their circumstances do not get the best of them. My students come to school in hopes of receiving love and care, in a safe environment, equipped with the necessary materials to be successful. If I had to choose only one word to describe my students, I would choose eager. My students are eager to learn, eager to be engaged in meaningful lessons, and eager to push themselves to achieve greatness. Although they are willing to put in the effort, they lack the materials needed to be successful in the classroom currently, as well as for the next school year.
My Project
My project will enable my students to get the necessary supplies to be successful at school this year, from the beginning to the end. I want all of my students to feel loved and supported.
By providing my students with the needed supplies, I can help ease anxiety and make back to school an exciting time for them!
Students should not have to worry about not having supplies or not being able to keep up in the classroom because they now live in a technology based society where they need to be successful.
I believe that coming into a classroom that is unconventional and already equipped with supplies would encourage more student engagement and meaningful peer to peer conversations. Providing my students with these basic supplies is one way that I hope to remove some of the barriers that they face and make learning fun for each one of them!
With all of these materials I will create a tub for my students to help the complete their learning activities. Many of my students lack materials at home to do many of the assignments that are assigned to them. Therefore, all of these materials, such as crayons, scissors, pencils, and journals will give them materials to use to complete all of their reading and math assignments. The writing journals will give them the paper they need to continue to practice their writing skills.
At our school, we work to teach the whole child, socially, emotionally and academically. Assisting in tearing down those barriers with small changes could be just the trick to pushing them forward to reach their goals.
