Encourage student choice and give them a comfortable place to read! I teach 120 tenth and eleventh grade students with many reluctant readers. It is important that I encourage their reading and literacy practice through independent reading.
I let them choose their books and have a voice in the books we add to our classroom library.
When students have a choice, they buy into what they are doing. My goal is to create an inviting and comfortable classroom that is the best place they can be for 90 minutes every day to read, learn, and share with each other.
My Project
Flexible, comfortable seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent reading times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a various locations in the room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables, or sitting on the floor. Making sure students are comfortable makes them feel welcomed, motivated, and, invited. I have noticed my more at promise students are more engage when given the opportunity to define their work space.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
The saucer and inflatable chairs will allow students to sit more comfortably and will allow them to focus on their work while using the lap desks to support their books and materials. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that are just tired of sitting at a standard student desk. Reading, especially, should be a comfortable and relaxing activity. The seating can also easily be moved around the classroom.
