Floor pillows just seem like the most comfortable option for the 50-60 students in each class at one time. I know if I'm more comfortable, I can learn better. The chairs we have don't fit all the different body sizes I teach.
My students are so eager to learn and I'm proud of how much musical knowledge they already have.
Most classrooms in the school are using flexible seating and love it. Having a fun and relaxed atmosphere helps students feel safe, especially when being creative. If the student is relaxed and feels like they can create without criticism, they will discover how musical they can be.
My Project
With these new floor pillows my students will be able to get up move to music in the room or sit and play instruments comfortably. We play a variety of instruments sitting on the floor while reading the music on the projector screen. We also need to rotate between instruments during class. None of which is easy with the chairs in the way.
For some music, they need to be able to move around the room easily for physical musical expression.
When we earn the recorder karate belts the students stand in line to show me they know the music. They have to be able to walk around the other students who are still practicing.
The chairs are one size fits some, but not all. I can tell that quite a few of my students are not comfortable.
