Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but 64% of the students are Hispanic, with non-English speaking families. Many of the students are bilingual, especially if they have been enrolled in school in the US since 4K. I do have students that are new the country and have no English. I work in a Title I school, where we offer 100% free breakfast and lunch daily for our students. I also apply for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant each year so that the students will receive a healthy snack 3-4 days a week. Many of the students receive food backpacks on Friday so they have food for the weekend.
The students love coming to school and are eager to learn.
The students are well behaved and thrive in our classroom community. They are supportive of each other in the classroom and on the playground.
My Project
These materials will create a cozy classroom library that will encourage and invite students to read. High-quality literature draws students' attention and engages them in close reading. The titles selected are books students seek in the media center and books we use during interactive read aloud.
Students that have a variety of comfortable seating options will read for longer periods of time, which will improve the students' reading stamina.
To catch students' attention, placing books at eye level and displaying them in a visually attractive way, encourages students to browse through and select books that are most interesting. Piles/stacks of books can discourage students from selecting books to read.
The chairs and tables offer students seating options instead of a tiled floor. Students can sit alone or with a friend on the couch. The bookshelves allow the books to be displayed so students can see the cover of the book in order to make selections easier. The shelving prevents clutter and piles of books, which can be overwhelming for a student with not knowing where to begin looking. The bookshelves advertise the books, help students make quicker selections, and promote longer sustained reading time.
