Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of District Reference Group “H” which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.
As an eighth grade ELA teacher, I have witnessed the great needs of my students.
A high percentage of the students who attend my school receive free and reduced-price lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met as well. These circumstances can make it very difficult for some families to afford basic school supplies. Many of my students are also ELLs and need extra support when reading grade-level materials. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources, especially when it comes to technology.
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many students are struggling to learn the language while trying to complete their eighth-grade work. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
My Project
Consistent reading is important for students to succeed in all subject areas. If students read just 20 minutes per day, they will be exposed to over 1.8 million words over the course of a year. In my class, students are given time to independently read a few times a week. Our classroom needs an attractive library that will allow my students to find their next great read!
I'm requesting copies of the books The Female of the Species, The Thief, Front Lines, and The Thousandth Floor.
The storage baskets and bins will help students find books easier because they can be organized by topic, series, or reading level. The easel book holder racks will allow me to promote books in our library.
By stressing the importance of reading in my own classroom and having an attractive classroom library for my students to visit, my students will be set up for success for years to come!
