Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students live in the worst area, of a large city, in Maryland. Sometimes, just getting to school is a struggle. For most, school is the only constant in their lives.

Our school is in the bottom ten percent, in the entire state of Maryland.

This means that our students get a lot of services. Unfortunately, although the services do help, my students lack motivation. Therefore, I am constantly looking for ways to constantly engage my students. Any resources will assist our educational community.

My Project

Many of my students love science but they do not like to read much because they say that the selections that are currently available are boring. That is why I selected these books to increase interest in reading about science.

These books were selected because they are fun.

Also, many of the students are one or two grade levels behind in reading. Therefore, with these invigorating titles, their reading levels will increase.

In the book The Way Things Work Now, students will learn how things work now as opposed to how they worked when they were first introduced.

In the Science Book, students will be able to reference ideas in science and the big ideas will be simply explained.

In the book, National Geographic Kids Why, the students will learn why things happen and the ideas behind them.

There are a few students who are on grade level. For those students, I selected a science trilogy. The trilogy mentions concepts we are learning. Therefore, the students will make the literature and science connection.
