Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My economic students are high school Seniors trying to understand how to budget their money before they enter the real world. Students are challenged to understand economic scenarios and then apply them to projects using both mathematics and specific economic terminology. Our school is located in a very low socioeconomic area and our students are often in need of great amounts of community assistance just to survive. The technology gap in our community and within our school walls is vast. We lack the resources to provide computers in our classrooms for instruction leaving our students unprepared for challenges, college and career with regard to financial literacy.
The Investing: Your Future Depends On It project helps students to learn how to navigate the process of managing a paycheck, saving both short and long term, making good choices about student loans, buying a car and investing for retirement.
It is imperative that the youth of our nation enter adulthood with the necessary skills to not only survive, but thrive.
My Project
Preparing the next generation for financial challenges such as student loans, buying a car, paying rent, managing stocks is one of the most important things that an economics class provide students. Our students love their smartphones, but are they using technology to express money smarts? Low income students who do not have regular access to computers for academic purposes are being left behind in learning fiscal concepts and we need technology in our classroom to fill the achievement gap. Implementing Chromebooks into the classroom will provide all students the access needed to work on real life projects in my Economics class. These projects include creating your own Stock Brokerage, making decisions on student loans, debt management, Garage Sale Marketing to create Demand and dump your supply, Grocery Store Coupons and How they affect prices, creating a personal budget for saving, Buying a home in California: It can be done, and Saving for Retirement.
