My Students

Our school is an ethnically diverse middle school in the San Fernando Valley. Nearly thirty percent of the students who attend our school are admitted through School of Choice permits granted to students from under-performing schools. The students in the STEAM Magnet, which is 60% ethnic minorities, are eager to learn with the most cutting-edge technology in order to be prepared for whatever career they decide on after college. Many of the students do not have access to even simple computers at home and rely solely on the school to provide support and exposure to the latest technology and instruments to soar academically.

My Project

The students will use these microscopes often throughout the school year in STEAM classes. Access to these microscopes is fundamental to the hands-on investigations of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Students will be involved with inquiry-based science labs and will be observing their own cheek cells, paramecia, brine shrimp (sea monkeys), plant cells, bacteria in yogurt, and stomata in leaves of plants that play an important role in photosynthesis and transpiration.

Our school currently has a limited number of microscopes to use for a large number of students (2,200).

Your help would be greatly appreciated in getting this much needed tool into the hands of young, budding scientists.
