When was the last time that you participated in a science lab or experiment in 3rd grade? For most of us, it never occurred! We are here to change the way students view the world! Encouraging them to investigate and explore and to ask questions prepares them for what life has in store!
I teach in a school that is extremely diverse.
Some of the students come with a magnitude of background knowledge, where some of them are just forming ideas based on experience. In my classroom, I have some students that have been identified as Gifted and Talented, as well as some second language, ESL learners. The bottom line is, all students should be given the same opportunities to learn and to share their conclusions of their investigations.
My Project
By having access to triple balances, hand lenses, eye droppers, and a 3-D model of the planets; my students will be given multiple opportunities to manipulate everyday science tools. They will participate in the scientific process providing hypothesis and conclusions based on observation. They will explore first hand what it takes to be a scientist. They will also be able to create solutions to everyday problems.
Science is such an important field to learn!
In fact, it often goes untaught because the lack of supplies, or the extra cost added to teachers. I am very passionate and feel that students need every opportunity to participate in hands - on labs that engage learning and allows ideas of others to be shared and respected!
