Investigating Earth's Weather Patterns and Climate
Help me give my students tools to investigate the water cycle, the interactions between air masses, and the unequal heating of earth. We will use the barometer, anemometer, thermometer, and hygrometer to recognize patterns to understand weather patterns.
Plutarch once said, "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled." Our sixth grade students are challenge seekers who have ignited their passion for learning. My students are inquisitive about the world around them. I work in a Title I schoolm where 48% fall in the low socio-economic range, 20% are English Learners, and 43% are considered Ethnic Minority. With diverse backgrounds and perspectives, each student has a voice and a unique perspective in our classroom community.
We don’t believe only some people have the “science gene.” We will utilize science and engineering practices to make learning accessible to each student.
Through our experiences, experiments, and discussions, we hope to develop resilience and to learn from both our failures and successes. We are seeking scientific tools to help us create hands-on lab opportunities.
My Project
We will conduct a variety of experiments to help students understand the Earth's weather patterns. We will use weather instruments to collect data and recognize patterns such as high pressure, low pressure, temperature, etc.
We do not have a sink in our portable, so it will be helpful to have access to a pump to connect to a five gallon water bottle, hot water dispenser, and a portable sink tub to conduct experiments.
We will also use the Plaster of Paris and storage containers to examine the phenomenon of Lake Effect.
With hands-on experiments, students will be able to connect what they are learning to understanding the world around them.
