My students walk into math class each day with a smile, a great attitude, and an open mind. I teach an advanced group of eighth graders who value their education and crave challenge. They are determined to learn and succeed, and they're always willing to put in the hard work it takes to achieve at high levels.
Our school is located near an Army base, and many students have a family member who is currently serving our country.
My students take great pride in our country and in their family members' service. Many of my kids come to school each day ready to learn and give their best, despite the difficulty of having a parent who is deployed.
My Project
Using graphing calculators in class will allow collaborative groups to investigate equations and discover their connections to graphs. This time-saving technology will let students spend more of their class time engaged in math conversations that lead to a deeper understanding of the ideas.
My students are eager to find the meaning behind their algebra calculations, and these graphing tools are perfect for helping them make those connections.
For example, a collaborative group will be able to use the calculator to see the effect that changing an equation has on a graph, quickly test several more cases, and form a generalization. When students discover these connections on their own, they also develop meaning and understanding.
Students will have access to this tool when they are showing their mastery of algebra on state testing in the spring. It's important that they learn to use these graphing calculators so that they are fully able to demonstrate all that they learn this year!
