Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live and play in Camden, New Jersey one of the most unsafe cities in the US. For most of my students our Physical Education (PE) classes are the only real exercise they get due to lack of safe outdoor play areas in their neighborhoods. As most K, 1 and 2 graders, they are very energetic, vary in ages, sizes and skill levels. Like all elementary students they love to move! I remind my students how lucky they are to have (PE) in an indoor gym. This is my 7th year teaching PE in Camden and my first year teaching in a gym, previous years I taught outside in the Camden neighborhoods.
My job is to keep them safe, make them sweat, challenge them and give them a variety of different ways to smile, develop motor skills, confidence, coordination, balance, self body awareness, social skills and positive sportsmanship.

My Project
I am asking for tumbling mats, low level balance beams, tactile obstacle stepping stones, two low level basketball nets and junior basketballs. A safe, dedicated tumbling and balance beam program develops motor skills, confidence, coordination, balance and self body awareness. Some of my more talented students just love to show off their cart wheels and head stands. This equipment will allow me to teach all my students various tumbling skills safely. My students are big fans of basketball but so far we have only started to master dribbling skills. We are unable to fully develop shooting skills because our nets are so high only a few students are strong enough to reach the net. Please trust that I will use this equipment all year long in a variety of activities outside our tumbling and basketball units.
