Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is exceptional because we serve students from every demography life offers. From families who are homeless to families with 3000 square foot homes, our students' needs are as diverse as their life experiences. Our school is a miniature global society.
My transitional kindergarteners are our future world leaders - they must learn how to be empathetic, creative, innovative and collaborative.
The 21st Century skills required to grow up to be successful adults cannot be learned with a standardized curriculum!
By investing in my 5 year old students today, you are helping create a better future for all of us.
My Project
Students in Transitional Kindergarten turn 5 years old between September 1 and December 1. These are my students - their developmental individuality is highlighted at this age, and their experiences now highly impact their future success in school.
Ensuring that each of my students has access to materials to stimulate their natural creativity, ingenuity, and empathy is essential for them to develop innovative problem solving skills.
My early development of these skills was supported by living near the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. My students don't have that luxury - however, with your generosity, I can bring those experiences to my classroom.
After receiving the materials, you can visit our classroom and experience for yourself the tangible energy of engagement and curiosity coursing through every child. You will see children building tall structures, accidentally knocking them down, and starting over with enthusiasm. You will see children using foam blocks of many shapes and sizes in our water exploration tubs, trying to build tall structures. You will hear students talking about why their boat is better than another student's bridge for saving the Gingerbread Man from his terrible fate. You will hear students comparing their "Log Cabin" design to the log cabin Abe Lincoln once lived in. You will be able to walk up to a group and ask them about their work, and hear their pride shine through the explanation.
Your contribution will technically and figuratively be used to purchase building blocks. These blocks are the foundation my class will depend on to facilitate development of their Growth Mindset; cultivate their curiosity; nurture their empathy; help them learn to express themselves socially and academically; and most importantly, develop their passion for learning.
