This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm seeking to expand our Active Learning Space with items for a throwing center and sensory vests. I currently serve 7 students with multiple disabilities in a self-contained setting. Our curriculum emphasizes developmental, motor, and communication skills.
The requested materials will increase student engagement, attention, and functional development.
As a result of limited motor abilities, Fred needs materials stabilized so he can sustain contact. By attaching a variety of sensory materials to his workstation, he can independently manipulate the objects.
My Project
My students have several needs that require assistance to perform even the most basic of tasks. A weighted sensory vest would help develop motor skills in the students. To increase the independent skills needed for the students to thrive they need an array of tactile sensory materials to desensitize their perception and get them to explore the world around them.
The proposed sensory weighted vests will be equipped with objects to stimulate the student’s auditory and tactile receptors.
Adding bells, measuring spoons, brushes and sensory balls will motivate the students to engage in the functional skill areas. They can use the sensory balls to work on tactile skills, the bells to receive auditory stimulation, and the measuring spoons for vocational training.
