Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Giving gifted students the opportunity to turn their creative ideas into inventions is an exciting and valuable experience for young scientists.
My students participate in a special program for identified gifted 5th graders.
Our Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) is a weekly pull-out for gifted fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. The enrichment curriculum includes foreign language, art history, public speaking, mathematics, computers and technology, and special units of study in the areas of marine science, archeology, geology, world history and geography, law, marketing and advertising, engineering, inventions, tolerance, architecture, the brain and psychology, paleontology, and anthropology. The curriculum is specially designed for students who require advanced studies above and beyond the regular core curriculum.
My Project
My 5th grade GATE students are beginning a unit of study on inventions. They will explore the inventive process, participate in a variety of activities to foster their creative imaginations, and finally create their own inventions. We will culminate our study by displaying the students' projects at the "Invention Convention." Projects will be judged by the 6th grade GATE classes. Students, teachers and parents will be invited to view the projects. Large project boards will be a wonderful way for students to proudly share the details of their creations.
This invention project is a valuable enrichment experience for young scientists.
The project will give students the opportunity to explore their creative abilities, expand their scientific knowledge and computer/technology skills. Students also will be able to engage in hands-on building experiences, write and illustrate their project details, organize and display information and give an oral presentation.
