Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science and technology have walked hand-in-hand for ages. These resources will digitally record lab data and give students the ability to statistically analyze the information. This will no doubt lead to an enhanced understanding of the content.
My students are a remarkable group of 10th, 11th and 12th graders at an inner-city school in Washington DC.
My school caters to students from all over our Nation's Capital. Learners in my class come from a variety of backgrounds, many of them are bilingual. Often times it is the students who are teaching me. This helps make going into school every day a joy. Despite the minority and low-income status of the majority of our students, our school is dedicated to preparing all of our students to go to college. Many of my students are learning English as a second language and most need to hands-on experience with the content in order to be ready to take on college level work.
My Project
The colorimeters will measure the amount of light that can pass through a solution. This will give students the opportunity learn more about the components of these solutions and how they can change over the course of a reaction. These probes interface with computer software that my school already has. The program graphs data real-time and allows students to run a variety of statistical tests.
Schools in urban settings are renown for their lack of technology in science labs.
AP Chemistry labs require a great deal of lab equipment. Right now I face not being able to complete some of the College Board recommended labs due to the lack of technology. This Vernier equipment promises to make up much of that ground.
