My students are in Kindergarten through fifth grade. My school is in a small rural community where there are a lot of unique needs. Our school received the unique honor of being named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2018. My students all have disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, Learning disabilities, Angelman’s Syndrome, and developmental delays. My students have communication issues and have to find different ways to demonstrate their knowledge.
My students learn in unique ways, and their instruction must be modified to meet their needs.
They are hard workers and do their best all day long. There are so many challenges students with disabilities face, but they are constantly working to overcome these challenges and prove that they are more than their disability.
My Project
My students will be able to use these materials for creating and designing structures and other STEM learning activities. They will work on spacial awareness, how things fit together, and problem solving skills. My students will use the creativity in new and exciting ways. They will learn to work together as a team to build new designs.
Allowing student's creativity in their learning will create life long learners.
STEM fosters independent learning and allows students to gain confidence in themselves without everything being teacher guided. Students with special needs often become very reliant on their teachers and feel the need for constant reassurance, STEM activities will help them develop the skills they need for independence in school.
