Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is the second year our school has been able to offer performing and visual arts classes all year and the students are very excited about continuing art education! Our school has over four hundred students with a higher than average diversity for most public schools in California. The school is about ten percent English language learners and thirty percent free/reduced lunch. Building a program from scratch is hard work but very worth it! In our class, we spend a lot of time getting to express ourselves and finding ways to connect to each other.
Our school is very diverse and focuses on supporting students through the variety of life circumstances they are facing.
Students in my class work on empathy and connection units, spend time talking about how to openly collaborate with people different than themselves and engage in projects that highlight global and local issues that are important to them. They are a curious, creative and energetic bunch of students that I love dearly!
My Project
In this course, students will learn about a variety of painting materials and painting techniques. Students will explore abstract art, impressionism, painting in crafts and mural art with a variety of mediums with new brushes, paper and paint. Students will complete the semester by creating a community piece to hang up in the school.
Creating public art pieces will encourage students to explore building community pride through art.
I am excited to have students take the skills they develop and display their own unique, passionate and wonderful perspectives in our larger community. At the end of the semester, students will choose to create a hanging piece to display in the hallways or paint a mural on one of the outdoor eating spaces in the school.
