This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of first graders in a Title I school. They are each unique with different learning styles and interests. Despite their differences, they come to school each day with open minds and open hearts and are ready to tackle the day.
Their passion for learning and the desire to do well is what makes them so phenomenal.
My students are thinkers. They persevere and support each other when learning new concepts. They build each other up. They feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. These students have built relationships with not only me, but with each other. In our classroom, we are like a family. We laugh together, grow together, and they encourage each other to be the best version of themselves that they can be.
My Project
A common question I always ask my students is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I typically get the same answer. Year after year, most respond by saying, “Garbage Man or McDonald’s Worker.” While there isn’t anything wrong with these aspirations, I’ve realized that their exposure to STEM related fields is limited. They have never heard of careers such as Astronauts or Veterinarians. This project is aimed at fixing that problem.
Incorporating STEM concepts in an unconventional way to encourage student interest in STEM careers is key.
Getting these STEM materials will let me have “Career Days” in our room where students can learn about different STEM related careers. Each hands-on center will allow my students to be immersed in different STEM careers while facing real-world problems. They will be the astronauts, veterinarians, and engineers. They will work collaboratively to solve different problems or find solutions to the task cards at each center. By exposing them to these STEM career challenges, students will come to understand how certain skills and situations will benefit them out in the real-world. The possibilities are endless and their potential is limitless with these engaging, high interest STEM materials. Please consider helping out our future Astronauts and Veterinarians.
