Help me give my students the opportunity to fall in love with reading as I use picture books to help them understand classroom procedures, kindness, and compassion.
My fourth grade class is filled with a range of students from both low income and high income families. Some students have access to books, technology, and a well-rounded home life. While others in my class have very little. They are all hard working, active, enthusiastic, high-spirited children who are eager to learn! My students are 9 and 10 years old, and are a very energetic group. My students love technology, sports, animals, and many other things. But most of all, they love getting to interact with each other in the room and on the playground.
My Project
Picture books teach compassion, kindness, and expectations all while keeping students engaged with vivid pictures and detailed text. Many people think of younger elementary grades when talking about picture books in the classroom. However, picture books deserve a place in the upper elementary classroom as well. These books will aid in their learning, as well as give them control of the classroom rules and expectations. While reading these books as a class whole, students will collaborate and decide what is expected of them based on what they have read.
Picture books can also help teach deeper meaning, social & emotional skills, and lifelong memories.
My students love to read. They read chapter books and picture books, and other various genres. I am asking for thirty-seven books including The Boy Who Loves Words, Something Extraordinary, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes, and Ida, Always. By helping us get our hands on these books, you will be giving us the opportunity to explore the world, explore our emotions, and explore the skills we are taught within the classroom to be successful students and members of society.
Picture books have made a huge impact on my students in the past for not only Reading skills but Math as well. I look forward to having the opportunity of surprising them with all these wonderful books that will help us a class to become successful in all that we do.
