Introducing Music Therapy as a Coping Skill

Help me give my students a music therapy area. We are exploring different methods for coping with emotions, and music therapy is an area of interest. I have selected a keyboard and drums to start this music therapy area.

My Students

I teach a Precision Class (PTC) for students with Autism. Most of the students are working on grade level but lack social skills to succeed in the classroom. Schedule changes, noise levels, and new skills that the student does not understand can be a challenge. I use a daily point system to provide a small daily reward, weekly rewards, and six-week goal-setting​ rewards. Other times I will provide a sensory break, art time, or social story teaching.

Autism is a disability with a diverse ability level.

A person can be on the high end of the spectrum and only lack some social skills or have challenges in academic areas as well. For students with academic challenges to grasp new concepts, they need hands-on activities.

My goal is for each child to reach his or her full potential by providing the needed support determined by the individual level.

My Project

Although these drums and the keyboard will not be taken home, students can learn to use music and at home incorporate music therapy in different methods like creating a music playlist, making a drum, or singing. I will use this music therapy area for them to explore the area of producing music as part of coping skills. Music can be used to motivate, soothe, and to express one's feelings. I know this will be a lifelong coping method for those that embrace this idea. Music is a powerful tool to learn to use to balance your feelings.
