Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The goal of this project is to get our students more engaged in hands-on science labs in the river setting for all Newcomers Science, Life Science, Biology, & Honors Biology classes. Every year for decades, our students have been found performing aquatic field studies in the Little Arkansas River each summer, fall, and spring. We have had some complications in the past several years, as nearly all of our waders have been in use for over a decade and have holes in the seams and boot areas. We’ve tried repairing them but to no avail. The river is such an asset to the nearly 550 Newcomers, Life Science, Biology, & Honors Biology students so we have just told our students to bring a full set of clothes with them as they will most likely be drenched after river work. Obviously, this is not ideal. As a result, we are requesting waders and seining nets. This would allow us to replace half of a class set.
My Project
It is one thing to just learn about fish and local ecology in a classroom with computers and pictures, but actually getting to go into the river and seine for fish is an experience students don't forget. Students get to walk out about 4 feet deep into the river and work in teams to seine for fish using nets. It requires them to work together, they have a ton of fun experiencing biology first hand, and they get an ecology lesson that they will remember for years, instead of just weeks. With new waders in many sizes, students won't have to be soaking wet for the rest of the school day after going into the river for biology work.
