Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a very fortunate teacher that gets to spend all day with my students. Normally, this would not be desireable for a secondary teacher, but my students are young adults who need a great deal of guidance, and support. My students struggle greatly with academics, and managing their behavior. However, in a supportive enviornment like my program we are able to work together to succeed. The best thing about this job is getting to see the incredible young adult that is often hidden behind emotional walls. One thing I can tell you is that they all believe they are the "bad kid", and that they all want to do great things. It is a lot of work to get them to believe in themselves, but when they do - it is the best feeling.
Career ready is our main focus in my classroom. We are a class of exceptional students with intellectual challenges who require social-emotional support in order to prepare for school, life, and work. In this self-contained classroom we operate a small fast-food business on campus, while learning the professional work place standards. My goal is to have students who are interview, and job ready by the time they graduate from my program. Attending a job fair with our interview portfolios (resume, food handler's card, sample applications, strengths and weaknesses, skill sets, etc) my students will apply their knowledge to either get employement, or experience and learn from their first interview. Skills that will be assessed are: proper communication and appearance, preparedness, appropriate writing/spelling for workplace documents, and many more! Supplies would greatly assist us in adequately preparing for this venture.
In Their Own Words
I want to get a job but I need help showing that I can work good because I do not explain myself right. I don't have someone to help me with getting a job, and I need help cause I don't know all the stuff that I need. (K.H.)
For me I think getting a job is easy if they see me work first or know me. But if I have to interview with someone that doesn't know me, I don't think I will get the job. Mrs. M helps me, and I need help with organizing what I need. I would like to have some folders to go to the job fair, and show them all the good I can do, and that I am ready. (D.E.)
The only job I can get is landscaping from my neighbor. If I get help and be prepared with a folder that shows I work hard, it will help me. (S.M).
We will be leaders because Mrs. M can't go with us to the interviews, and she can't make us want to to get a job. We just have to get her help, and then we need to be leaders, and be positive to go interview at the places we want to get hired at the job fair. I think that if you are not a leader, and do not listen and let her help, then we won't be ready to be leaders when the job fair comes. We all want to be leaders when we graduate and have jobs. Doing nothing can get us in trouble.
If you help us we will come to school every day, and work on getting all our of stuff ready to be ready for the job fair. We help to get and organizing all the papers we need to look professional. We need to show that we know how to work good and will be working and doing good things in our community.
