Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is an intervention math class. I work with my students to not only develop their math skills, but also to help with other important skills such as logic, problem solving, and special reasoning.
My school is a Title 1 (high poverty) school.
All of my students either did not meet, or barely met minimum expectations on the STAAR test (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) from the previous school year.
My students have their regular core math class every day, as well as mine. Being "the second math teacher" can often be a challenge. I try to work in games whenever I can to keep my students engaged and still doing meaningful work.
My Project
On most days we work to develop math skills. That's where the dice games and writing utensils will be used. But one day a week I have set aside to work on the non-number skills. We work on brain-teasers and puzzles and riddles to make them think and develop problem solving skills. We also work on spatial reasoning with the types of games in the project.
These items will help my students to develop intangible skills that really cannot be taught.
Students at Title 1 schools do not often have games and puzzles in the home which help develop and strengthen the brain which then improve the students' academic performance.
