Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are dual language learners, many of whom come from low income backgrounds. They tackle the difficulties of learning all they need to be successful in 4th grade, in two languages! Every day they come in eager to work hard to reach their goals.
My students know that, together we are better.
We work hard, together, to become better mathematicians, readers, writers, scientists and historians. We work together to grow our language abilities so that, someday, when they are leaders, they can communicate their vision. With the power of education, in two languages, they will make our world a better place.
My Project
For weeks now we have been learning Texas history, and how European people came and settled in the "New World". We talk about all kinds of continents, countries, cities, and of course Texas. But we don't have any maps to help us get an idea of where these people came from, or why it was such a big deal. The maps and globe in this project will finally help us make all of those places more concrete.
A large part of preparing our students for upper grades, as well as college, is helping them become better readers and writers.
We spend time in all contents reading and writing. As English language learners, many of my students struggle with a limited English vocabulary. My goal, as a teacher, is to give them tools they can use to expand their vocabulary for reading and writing about the world around them. These dictionaries and thesauruses will allow us to practice in partners so that each student in more engaged in learning how to use these tools. Once they have learned how to use them, our resource materials will stay in an easily accessible area, so that students can use them as the read and write independently.
