Intergrating Science and Literature

My students need 15 copies of "The Skeleton Inside of You", by Phillip Balestrino.

Grades 3-5

I am a third grade teacher at an intercity school in North Carolina. My school is the poorest in the county with ninety-eight percent of students participating in the Free or Reduced Lunch Program. Over fifty percent of students are involved in the English as a Second Language program. Due to economic demographics, these students receive little educational support at home and have limited access to books in the home. These factors present significant educational barriers for these young people, as well as often insurmountable challenges to the dedicated educators teaching them. My goal is for my students to become excited about Science and Reading at the same time. It is important for students to learn about concepts through reading because it not only increases understanding, but also improves their comprehension and fluency. Often the only resources available to whole classrooms to facilitate reading in Science are textbooks. Textbooks can be a valuable source, but children are much more motivated to learn by reading engaging children's books. I would like my students to be able to gain knowledge of the Skeletal System through the non-fiction book, The Skeleton Inside of You. This literature would be a powerful tool in overcoming some of the learning barriers confronting students. I also know this will help me be more creative and effective in my instruction. My goal is to be able to teach the majority of Science concepts through children’s literature and hands on experiments. I am confident this will result in substantial increase in student interest, enthusiasm and learning improvement.
