My Students

I teach 4th-6th graders at a public Montessori charter school in Wilmington, Delaware. This year has started off in a very unusual way: half of my class is hybrid and goes into school three mornings a week to learn with my co-teacher, and I teach the other half virtually. In the afternoons, we come together as a class online for science and social studies lessons. I love how hard my students are working during this unusual time in their lives and how much they still want to learn!

My Project

A few of the items in this project are to supplement our social studies instruction as we are learn about US history and geography virtually during the pandemic. These items will help me create interesting lessons to teach from a distance to better engage my students.

Most of the items requested are book sets, so I can do small group book clubs online with my students.

They will get to choose which book interests them from our new books, and then we will read and discuss them. I want to provide more recently written, high quality choices that are varied in genre and are more diverse. By getting these book sets, students would be able to read the books at home, and I love the idea of them reading physical books rather than relying on ones they can read on their electronic devices. This would allow our reading instruction to be like it would be at school. Students don’t all have books at home that would allow for rich discussion, and by being able to provide books for them to read during the pandemic, I hope to turn even the most reluctant readers into excited readers! By reading the same books as other students, they will be able to feel more connected and continue their reading growth even as we all learn from our homes.

There's also a book about setting goals, because I want to motivate my students to set goals for themselves and work to achieve them, even while learning from home. It can be hard to feel motivated while working at home alone, so I want to encourage them to set goals.

Having these items would mean the world to us, as we learn virtually during unprecedented times.
