Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching students in a special day class. They are all boys and all in 6th grade. Most of my students have specific learning disabilities and Intellectual disabilities and are having challenges in their learning. I teach in rural California, in an area notorious for gang violence. Thirty-seven percent of children in our district are experiencing homelessness.
Our school is a Title I school where 100% of children qualify for free lunch and breakfast.
Many of our families' parents work as migrant farm workers.
My Project
The books that I selected will enhance my students reading comprehension and promote independent reading. This program will be very interactive for them.The books are in their interests and could develop their english reading ability since my students are Spanish speakers. My students are reading on a 1st - 2nd grade level. Many of the books in our classroom library are too advanced for students to enjoy. The books students can read are meant for kindergarten or 1st grade classrooms, and are too juvenile or uninteresting for 9 - 11 year old students. These sets of high interest low readability books will energize students and get them excited about reading. I plan to not only have students read these books during Independent Reading time, but also during Guided Reading. It is truly amazing to watch a child go from having no concept of letter-sounds, to being able to decode words in a book. These books will not only serve as tools for learning, but they will help boost my students' self-confidence as well. It is my hope that these books will make my English Language Learners - many of whom are scared of reading - excited and interested in literature!
