Yuck! Boring! I'm not doing it! NO MORE! Are these some of the words/phrases that come to mind when thinking of math? Cool! Can I try? My turn! Don't forget me! I know the answer! I get it! That was very easy!! These are the words/phrases I want to hear my students say when talking about math class.
I teach Liberal Arts Math and Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications to a variety of 9-12 grade students.
My Liberal Arts students are split up into two different groups. One group of students are students who did not pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The other group are students that have passed our FCAT. Two-fifths of my students are listed in the lowest 25% of tested students. Meaning, 75% of the students in the school, at their level, are testing higher than they are. These students are bored, and need activities that help them understand math. These students don't learn by reading their math book. They need to do it. They need to feel the math. They need to participate, so they will be able to understand the material presented. All of my students have voted and unanimously, they chose an interactive whiteboard, as a tool that they believe can help them in the classroom. They feel that my hands-on teaching style would be enhanced with this wonderful tool.
My Project
I am requesting an interactive whiteboard to enhance my teaching style. Imagine being able to go to the board to group like-terms. Imagine going to math class, and enjoying it. Imagine if you had a math teacher that loved to teach and had fun doing it. This is my room and what I want to create.
I want my students to want to interact with the lesson. I know this is possible with an interactive whiteboard. There a MANY resources and activities that can be preformed with this. With this interactive whiteboard, we can project a math problem on the board, and the students do the problem. I can also save the work, and post it on our website for absent students.
Students want to learn; they just need help staying active and alert. They need teachers to want to teach them. It is up to me to show them how to learn and teach the material to them. The best chance to get my students to learn is to get them active and participating in the lesson. Lets help these students enjoy their math class!
Our school has decided to "start over!" No more negatives!!
We want our students to learn! We are designing many ways to incorporate "fun" into our lessons. Please help me keep my students' attention and help them be involved with the lesson. I want my students to succeed. They need this knowledge to prepare themselves for college. I need your help so I can teach my students, with the best possible resources. Please help me help my students.
