My students include primarily 3 and 4 year olds that I see throughout the community including 2 full time Pre-K classes at an elementary and a Head Start. Most of my students come from lower income families without access to engaging forms of interactive technology.
Communication is the single best predictor of school success.
All of my students are special needs in some way that relates to an impairment with communication.
Students show amazing progress when technology is used interactively with peers and adults to teach them new skills. Even though I have been doing this for 20 years, I am still amazed at how much better my students do when I have creative, interactive, and visually based materials with which to teach them.
My Project
Students will be working with me using communication based software as well as a plethora of learning based websites that kids love. Sometimes they will also "show me what they know" by doing an independent activity on the computer using the tools and strategies that have already been taught. I use our school's smart notebook technology to make visuals and interactive activities related to themes and books for my students to help them communicate. I have a small space to work in with no smartboard, so this will be a smaller replacement solution.
This donation can jump start my new tiny room into 21st century learning with technology.
Students will improve listening skills and comprehension, verbal expression, and social skills through video modeling as they interact with my prompts and the computer's visuals.
